The Milwaukee County Office of Sustainability is seeking a part-time student intern this summer to support the development of a climate action plan for county operations. The intern will research, analyze, and communicate strategies for Milwaukee County to reduce its carbon emissions while helping to prepare county residents and businesses for the impacts of climate change.
 
Position Description:
The Summer 2023 Climate Action Intern position is a part-time, temporary internship. This position will last approximately 11 weeks and be completed in a hybrid environment – see Work Schedule. The internship is ideal for students seeking practical experience in the local government sustainability field. This position will perform data collection, technical analysis, and research in support of Milwaukee County’s Climate Action 2050 Plan (CA50 Plan).

Reporting to the Energy Program Manager, and in close collaboration with other Milwaukee County staff, the Climate Action Intern will assist with a range of tasks, including:

·       Perform technical analysis on climate action strategies as part of the CA50 Plan.
·       Provide administrative support for CA50 Plan meetings, including but not limited to drafting meeting materials and taking notes.
·       Collect and compile data related to Milwaukee County buildings, transportation, solid waste, urban forestry, and other operations.
·       Research and analyze opportunities for Milwaukee County to reduce its energy consumption and emissions, while improving racial and health equity.
·       Summarize findings and recommendations in a final report, to be presented to the Milwaukee County Sustainability Task Force.
·       Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
·       Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited college undergraduate or post-baccalaureate degree program.
·       Ability to research and synthesize complex information.
·       Strong written and verbal communication skills.
·       Ability to prioritize between multiple tasks and to meet deadlines.
·       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
·       Proficient with Microsoft Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.
·       Availability for occasional nighttime and weekend meetings and events.
·       Access to reliable transportation to job sites.

Preferred Qualification:
·       Demonstrated passion and dedication to advancing community sustainability and equity.
 
Work Schedule:
The intern will work up to 20 hours a week, with the option for flexibility to accommodate summer 2023 coursework. The internship will ideally run from June 5 – August 18, 2022. The intern is expected to work in-person at least one day per week at 633 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203. Other work will be performed remotely or at various locations within Milwaukee County to be determined. The position does not receive any benefits.
