The Eco-Justice Center looks to carry its environmental stewardship into the future by equipping tomorrow’s leaders with the skill necessary to sustain a vibrant local food movement. The program is seeking energetic adults to intern for the growing season and learn small-scale market gardening through our sustainable local food and farming initiative program. Participants will grow, cook, promote, and market healthy food raised on an educational farm.
  1. Grow and eat produce grown in the field and hoop house with sustainable, organic practices, as well as distribute vegetables to our on-site programs, farm stand sales, and community donations.
  2. Serve as an empowering leader and ambassador for food security by contributing to a local and just food system.
  3. Develop inter-personal skills while working within a collaborative team.
  4. Other opportunities: Availability to occasionally lead and interact with summer camp children ages 6-14; perform animal chores for alpacas, goats, chickens, and geese.
  5. Note: Housing not provided.
Requirements
  1. Adults (ages 18+) who are energetic, reliable, and have a demonstrated interest in sustainable agriculture.
  2. Must be willing to work outdoors in suboptimal conditions.
  3. Applicants must have reliable transportation.
  4. Must be a hard-working team player interested in learning organic agriculture, growing healthy food, leadership development, and making an impact toward improving local food security.
  5. Exhibit consistent skills – positive attitude, initiative, emotional maturity, self-responsibility and a desire to develop professional characteristics.
  6. Physical requirements – Must be able to bend, crouch, and stand for extended periods of time, have the ability to lift 50 lbs., work in the soil, and handle various farm equipment after instruction on use.
  7. Provide proof of vaccination.
  8. Program preference is given to residents of Racine County or outlying area.
  9. International applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without Eco-Justice Center sponsorship.
Pay Rate and Dates of Employment
Pay rate: $12.00 per hour (Tuesday – Friday, 8 hours per day from 7:30 am to 4:00pm, with an unpaid lunch) *Schedule is subject to change due to farmers markets, Farm Corps events, and Eco-Justice celebrations.
Start & end dates: June 1st – August 31st (with possible option to work limited hours beginning in May and extending through October, as well as availability for intern to end early in mid-August) Minimum commitment of 10 weeks
