Fund for Wisconsin Scholars Peer Mentor

Approximate hours per week: 8-12
Tentative start date: End of August 2020
Duration of positon: End of August 2020 - May 2021

Position Summary
The Fund for Wisconsin Scholars (FFWS) Peer Mentor will provide college support to first-year students receiving the FFWS grant for 2020-2021. The FFWS Peer Mentor will engage mentees in regular, in-person and electronic communication throughout the course of the year. Additionally, the FFWS Peer Mentor will help plan and facilitate events throughout the year to build rapport with their students and foster community amongst all grant recipients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A.    Provide peer mentoring support to enhance student success
1.     Engage in regular face-to-face and electronic communication with mentees
2.     Help students identify goals and campus resources through having individualized conversations with mentees
3.     Log all student interactions

B.     Serve as a collaborative member of leadership team
1.     Meet with your direct supervisor twice a month to touch base about progress, goals, and receive additional support
2.     Work with the direct supervisor to help plan, promote and host various events
3.     Engage in professional development happening on UW-Parkside’s campus
4.     Meet with your leadership team twice a month to share successes, ideas, and concerns regarding students and outreach
5.     Gain valuable leadership experience that will help you further develop your professional skills and achieve career goals

Essential Knowledge And Abilities
·        Familiarity with campus resources and ability to identify appropriate referrals
·        Active listening skills
·        Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the members of a team
·        Ability to communicate effectively using several communication methods
·        Ability to collect, organize, and record sensitive information

Standards of Performance
·        Willingness to be adaptable, flexible, and understanding of a student’s needs
·        Act as a peer mentor only; not as a counselor, advisor, etc.
·        Conduct yourself professionally in front of students
·        Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA

Required Qualifications
·        Be a returning Fund for Wisconsin Scholars grant recipient
·        Good academic standing
·        Must be available for all day training for the last week of August
